1) Clear cut Vision
A leader (of an organisation) needs to have a clear, well developed vision for his organisation. A thorough mental image for what he expects of the company in the foreseeing future. Goals for the organisation need to be well defined. This vision should be well imbibed in the employees and stakeholders of the business in good and during bad times. The vision should be reflected in action, as actions are more powerful than words.
2) Open communication
There should be open communication. Employees should be communicating the issues without any hesitation. Leader should communicate his ideas and listen to others. He should be open to other people – above, below & beside in terms of hierarchy. Being attentive to the needs of the company and its employees is rather crucial. A sense of equality should prevail in the environment, in terms of being able to voice their opinions and grievances.
3) Motivating people
A leader should be capable of enrolling people into his dream and vision. He should not dictate things rather he should be able enrol them with continual reinforcement. Organisational workforce should not only work for the pay cheque, but they also need to like what they do and feel inspired to do their work. Encourage them, train them, let them voice their opinions, constructive criticism is welcome for improvement, appreciate them. Once you take care of your employees, business will take care of itself.
4) Expressing genuine interest in others
It is important for a leader to for meaningful bonds; remembering people’s name & associations fall under this category. Being honestly concerned, caring and available for your people is what shows real strength and loyalty. Your motto at work should be more like, ‘I am here now, what can I do for you’ instead of ‘I am here now what can you do for me’
5) Seeing things from others point of view
To be able to have a better understanding of your consumers, being able to set foot into the other’s shoes is required. As a leader, this is just a given. To exceed the set expectations of your product or service shows real commitment.
6) Listening to learn
Leader should not just hear but really listen to his employees, customers, friends & family members – even to what the harshest critics have to say.
7) Teaming up for tomorrow
Leader should be able to build teams; lead teams & motivate them with unified vision. Any project should belong to the team and let as many decisions as possible come from the group. Participation should be invited rather than dictating any solution.
8) Respecting the dignity of others
Standards are set when the leaders embody it himself. Showing respect, earns respect and sets the table for the others to follow. Respect culture is a norm that needs to be more visibly and at the felt level evident.
